In ramblings by David Parden

Providing budget estimates to your clients can help you increase your sales significantly! Granted you will spend more money estimating these jobs with no guarantee of landing the project but if you do land the project you will likely end up with a much high profit margin than had you landed a competitive bid project. You will also know the project inside and out thus reducing your risk!

Budgeting jobs typically requires you to be able to design assist. This process is not as hard as you may think. With a little training you will be off and running and your clients will love the fact that you have the ability to perform this task!

When you put together a design assist budget you will be able to ensure that you have your allies on board with you to make sure you are getting the best possible value. The lighting representative that assist you in designing the lighting package will make sure you get the best possible price and not your competitor! The same holds true with your switchgear rep. You will be in the driver’s seat in deciding what goes into the project. You won’t have to worry about using ¾” EMT with compression fittings when ½” EMT with setscrew fittings will be just fine.

Once you have a reputation for being able to put together reliable budgets you will have a steady source of work to bid on that isn’t out on the street for competitive bid. You will see your award percentages go up along with you profitability. Not to mention your credibility and reputation as an electrical contractor!
