Estimator’s Responsibilities

Comments Off

Electrical Estimators carry a heavy burden of responsibility. Having a proven process can help lighten the emotional burden of this responsibility but not totally relieve it.

Some things sit squarely on the electrical estimator’s shoulders like having an accurate take-off, knowing the scope, risk, construction schedule, and etc. An estimator who is employed by a contracting company and is not the manager should not have to bear the burden of setting the sell price also.

The owner or manager should shoulder the responsibility of setting the sale price. Ultimately they are the person who is accountable for the success of the business. They have unique insight into the market place that the estimator may not have. At the very minimum they should have a scope conversation about the project that is being bid and come to an agreement about the estimator’s interpretation of the scope or work to be performed.

The main responsibility every estimator must shoulder is that of maintaining their personal integrity! Electrical Contracting can be a nasty business at times but at the end of the day we all have to look at ourselves in the mirror and like what we see!
